AIT 華裔官員和中興大學同學分享華裔美國人的經驗談 (圖/AIT)

美國在台協會官員Mr. Kendrick Liu 於11月17日拜訪國立中興大學歷史系, 並對50位大學生及博士生發表一篇以 "在美國的亞裔美籍人士"為題的演說. 他的演講內容主要是針對歷史性的華裔美籍移民潮, 適應及融入美國的新生活, 第2代的中華文化及語言學習, 年輕的國際學生問題, 和一些傑出的華裔美籍人士的介紹. 在問答時間中, 學生們熱烈的請教Mr. Liu 許多問題, 包括:

• 生涯規劃及改變
• 華裔美籍人士融入美國社會的時程
• 中國的崛起和華裔美籍人士在美國社會的重要性
• 在美國出現一位亞裔美籍總統的可能性
• 華裔美籍人士及中國城的模式
• 華裔美籍人士的後代和新移民的差異
• 美國文化的多樣化與文化隔閡

活動主辦人 陳靜瑜 博士 告訴美國在台協會同仁, 雖然這些歷史系學生已經由書本及教授所提供的課程來作華裔美籍的研究, 此活動可以藉由一位華裔美籍人士的親身經歷提供他們由不同角度來作探討.

On November 17, AIT officer Kendrick Liu visited the National Chung Hsing University Department of History and delivered a talk on the topic of “Asian Americans in the United States” to 50 undergraduate and Ph.D. students. His talk focused on the historical waves of Chinese-American immigrants, accommodation and integration to a new life in America, Chinese culture and language learning for the second generation, young international students' problems, and profiles of some successful Chinese Americans. During the Q&A session, the students peppered Mr. Liu with many questions on such topics as:

• career plans and changes
• the timeframe for Chinese American integration into U.S. society
• the rise of China and the importance of Chinese Americans in U.S. society
• the possibility of an Asian-American President of the United States
• stereotypes of Chinese Americans and Chinatown
• differences between later-generation Chinese-Americans and recent immigrants
• U.S. cultural diversity versus cultural division.

The program host, Dr. Chen Ching-yu, told AIT staff that "although these history majors have been learning Chinese-American Studies from books and professors, this program gives them a chance to learn about Chinese Americans from a different angle: that of a Chinese American's personal experience."
