靜宜大學英國語文學系每一年都舉辦 英語節.   今年, 靜宜大學 著重在 世界英文的主題上, 並邀請包括美國, 英國, 加拿大, 澳洲, 及紐西蘭, 等五個英語系國家的代表.  

美國在台協會經濟官Mr. Matthew O'Connor 受邀為美國代表,  並就美國運動厘語的典故及用法, 發表生動的演說.    用於棒球, 籃球, 及足球的譬喻- 如 Slam Dunk (輕而易舉) , Drop the Ball (把事情搞砸了) , Benchwarmer (坐冷板凳球員) 等等 , 都詳細地被解釋.  

Mr. O'Connor 也討論到運動對美國文化的影響, 並回答學生們對兩岸經濟合作架構協議主題,美台關係,美國對台灣及大陸的看法,美國簽證,及他對台灣的個人看法.

Providence University Department of English Language, Literature and Linguistics annually sponsors an English Festival.   This year Providence focused on the topic of "World Englishes," and invited representatives from five English-speaking countries: the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.   AIT Economics Officer Matthew O'Connor was invited to represent the United States, and gave a lively talk on the origins and use of American sport idioms.   Metaphors from baseball, basketball, and football--such as "slam dunk", "drop the ball", "benchwarmer," and others--were explained in detail.    Matthew also discussed the influence of sports on American culture, and responded to students' questions about ECFA issues, US-Taiwan relations, U.S. views on Taiwan and the Mainland, U.S. visas, and his personal impressions of Taiwan.
