美國和台中有著淵源已久又緊密的歷史.  早在1955年時, 附屬於美國在台協會的華語學校就在台中成立, 作為美國國務院外交學院在海外的研習所. 將近一個世代以來, 有許多的外交官在台中居住和求學.

今天, 將近有三千名美國人民居住在台中附近, 每年也將近有數千名美國遊客造訪台中. 美國在台灣的最大投資商, 康寧公司, 也在台中中部科學園區投資了美金三十億元, 包括一座造價二十億, 同時也是康寧公司在全球最大的液晶顯示器玻璃板廠.  除此之外, 台中也和美國九個城市締結為姊妹城市, 包括德州的奧斯汀市, 路易斯安納州的巴頓路琪市, 懷俄明州的夏陽市, 新罕布夏州的曼徹斯特市, 康乃迪克州的新海芬市,內華達州的雷諾市, 加州的聖地牙哥市, 華盛頓州的塔可馬市, 和亞利桑那州的土桑市.

最後, 台中也是台中美國資料中心的所在地, 由美國在台協會和國立台中圖書館聯合提供美國資訊和文化的單一窗口服務.

我希望藉由這個線上分處的成立, 增進雙方情感的聯繫, 更進一步加深美國和台灣人民之間的友誼.

I want to welcome you and thank you for visiting the American Institute in Taiwan's Taichung Virtual Branch Office. 

The United States and Taichung share a long and close history. The Chinese Language and Area Studies School, an office of the American Institute in Taiwan, was established in Taichung in 1955 as a field program of the Foreign Service Institute of the Department of State, and a generation of officers studied and lived in Taichung.

Today, over 3000 Americans live in and around Taichung, and thousands of travelers from the United States visit the Taichung area every year.  Corning, the largest U.S. investor in Taiwan, has invested $3 billion here, including a $2 billion dollar LCD-glass factory in Taichung's Central Taiwan Science Park that serves as the company's largest manufacturing facility in the world.  In addition, Taichung is the sister city to nine U.S. cities, including Austin, Texas; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Cheyenne, Wyoming; Manchester, New Hampshire; New Haven, Connecticut; Reno, Nevada; San Diego, California; Tacoma, Washington; and Tucson, Arizona. 

Finally, Taichung is home to the American Corner in Taichung, a partnership between the American Institute in Taiwan and the National Taichung library that serves as a one-stop center for information and culture from the U.S.  

It is my hope that this virtual office can serve as one more bond that contributes to enhancing the friendship between the peoples of Taiwan and the United States.
